Pepino Melon (Solanum muricatum) – A sweet, juicy fruit native to the Andean regions of South America, where it has been cultivated for centuries, particularly in Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. Revered by pre-Columbian cultures, pepino was often grown in highland terraces and traded as a delicacy among Andean communities. Spanish chroniclers later noted its cultivation during the colonial era, and from there it spread to Europe and Asia.
The fruit has a smooth, thin skin with striking purple streaks over a golden-yellow base. Its flesh is soft, aromatic, and subtly sweet, often described as a blend between melon and cucumber with a hint of pear. Refreshing and low in calories, pepino is enjoyed fresh, in fruit salads, smoothies, or as a light snack. Rich in vitamins A, C, and antioxidants, it combines history, nutrition, and flavor in every bite.
