Kaliasem (Syzygium polycephalum), also known as gowok or kupa in other parts of Indonesia, is a traditional tropical fruit native to Indonesia and found in regions such as Bali, Java, and Kalimantan. Once more commonly found in traditional markets, this local fruit has become less familiar as modern fruit varieties have gained popularity.
Small and round, kaliasem grows in clusters on trees. When ripe, it has glossy, deep-purple skin and juicy flesh that ranges from white to reddish-purple. Its flavour is refreshingly tangy, balancing a pleasant sourness with gentle sweetness and a slightly astringent finish. It can be enjoyed fresh or used in traditional Indonesian preparations such as rujak and fruit preserves.
Nutritional Highlights
Kaliasem contains naturally occurring bioactive compounds, including anthocyanins, the pigments responsible for its deep-purple skin. Laboratory studies have found antioxidant activity in extracts of the fruit, while research has also identified organic acids that contribute to its distinctive tangy flavour. However, detailed information about its nutritional composition, including the exact amounts of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fibre, remains limited.
More than just a seasonal fruit, kaliasem offers a taste of Indonesia’s rich agricultural heritage and celebrates the diversity of local produce waiting to be rediscovered and appreciated.
